Making sure you live in a safe home
Our homes contain appliances which, if not installed or operated correctly, may present a health and/or safety hazard. The foremost of these are combustion devices, such as furnaces, water heaters, and stoves. As part of our home performance inspection we will:
- verify that the home's furnace is venting properly and not releasing carbon monoxide into the home under worst case conditions
- verify that the water heater is venting properly and not releasing carbon monoxide into the home
- check for natural gas leaks around and inside accessible areas of the home
- test the stove and range top for steady state carbon monoxide generation and make sure it is at safe levels
- check the ambient carbon monoxide level in the home under worst case conditions and make sure it is at safe levels
Though we make no claim to find all possible hazards in a home, we make a diligent effort to uncover situations we consider unsafe or potentially hazardous. We will bring any obvious or apparent safety issues to you attention. Some examples are:
- furnaces in unvented cabinets
- water heaters with poorly venting flues
- gas leaks at the gas meter
- water penetration into the slab and exterior walls due to overwatering
- flammable materials near flame sources
- toxic materials stored unsafely
- leaky duct systems or heating plenums which bring contaminants into the home
